Also known as Phakisa Freeway, the circuit is situated just outside the gold mining town of Welkom. The circuit is situated on the arid 4,500 feet high central plateau and was built in the late 1990s with R80m of provincial government money to counteract a downturn in the local economy triggered by a slump in the price of gold.
